 WHAT IS TUMOR?

A tumor is an abnormal mass or lump of tissue that forms when cells grow and divide excessively in the body.

A tumor may be in the brain, on the skin, in the stomach, genital areas, duodenum.

Does tumor mean cancer?

As we know tumor is a mass or lump of tissue simply called swelling.  Not all tumors are cancerous but it is better to see a doctor if any appear on any part of the body.

According to National Cancer institute  tumor may define as.

An abnormal mass of tissue that results when cells divide more than they should or do not die when they should.

Types

Tumors can be

  • Cancerous  (malignant)
  • Pre malignant tumor
  • Noncancerous  (benign)

Causes

The body has the ability to control cell growth and division. Old cells are replaced by new cells to perform new functions. A tumor may form if the balance of cell growth and death is disturbed.

The tumor can be caused if there is a problem with the body's immune system.

Tobacco is one of the major causes of tumor, but excluding it there are many other risk factors which include:

  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Genetic problems
  • Obesity
  • Viruses
  • Radiation exposure
  • Benzene and other chemicals and toxins
  • Excessive sunlight exposure
Tumors may be specified to certain ages such as some types of tumor are more common in one sex than the other and some are more common in children or older adults.

Types of tumor

Benign tumor

A Benign tumor is  non cancerous. These tumors are non spreading means they do not spread to other parts and intact to the main site of tumor formation even they cannot grow. They may be painful or may not be. If the Doctor removes them, they generally do not return.

Pre malignant tumor

These are the tumors in which cells are not yet cancerous, but they have the potential to become malignant.

Malignant tumor

These are the cancerous tumors and are spreading ones means they spread to other parts of the body and affect other organs and organ system rather to remain intact to its origin site.

These are dangerous and leads to death. There are many types of malignant tumor, which affect the whole body and its systems.

It is not clear always that how a tumor will act in the future a benign may become pre malignant and then malignant and become dangerous or it may not happen.
